FILTER & FOCUS
Eat, Sleep & Stay-at-Home Retreat
ARTfuel has been hosting destination art retreats around the world in 2024. Our program, “Filter & Focus” was a big hit. Our 2025 destination art retreats will be an entirely new program. So, we had an idea…why not bring Filter & Focus right to your door, in the comfort of your own studio? No need to book flights, pack bags, or renew a passport. There’s no place like home, and there’s no time like now. Read more below…
There’s no place like home…
Filter & Focus is coming to you - online!
Our course breaks down the principles and elements of art and gives you hands-on experience simplifying composition, value and color. The hands-on part is important. It’s one thing to understand a concept, but an entirely different thing to implement it. Our exercises will introduce tools and ways to approach your work that have always been there, but just weren’t on your radar. This will open up a variety of new possibilities for you. These exercises provide guardrails to help you narrow your focus. Our painting prompts challenge you to apply the learning to your work. The result… your work, your voice, amplified. Our four week program will include all the lessons and exercises from our sold-out 2024 destination retreats. If you didn’t get a spot in 2024 or travel is not your thing, this is the perfect solution.

Your Instructors
Susan Melrath and Terri Froelich will provide presentations, demos and live-calls to walk you through the principles and elements of art, uncovering the essence of your inspiration and narrowing down the formal choices to support that inspiration. The innovative exercises explain color, value, and design in a whole new way.
Susan Melrath
Susan has been a painter for her entire adult life - working as a published illustrator for many years, and a studio artist for the last twenty. She discovered her love of teaching through coaching in the Art2Life Creative Visionary Program. As head coach, she helped thousands of artists find their way to making strong, authentic work. Her greatest love is helping painters understand how to organize the elements in their paintings to make them as strong and compelling as can be. Susan’s work can be seen at Art & Light Gallery in Greenville, SC and Museo Gallery in Langley, WA.
Terri Froelich
Terri Froelich is an abstract painter and photographer in Sausalito, California. Terri worked as a commercial photographer for many years before switching her focus to painting in 2002. She is represented by Julie Nester Gallery (Park City, UT), Slate Contemporary (Oakland, CA), and Kennedy Contemporary (Newport Beach, CA). Her passion for teaching has helped many artists find solutions in their process and strengthen their work. Terri and Susan launched ARTfuel in 2023 to help artists utilize the principles and elements of art in their work, offer new perspectives and assist them with their artistic journey through online courses and in-person retreats around the world.

“The exercises we did were transformative. One key takeaway for me was the concept of narrowing the parameters in order to create more cohesive paintings. This approach challenged me to focus on making more intentional choices with colour and composition which will lead to stronger work. I got the opportunity to try new things I wouldn’t normally do. Highly recommend it to anyone looking to push their artistic boundaries!” ~ Andrea Piccinin

“A highly recommended course!! I was fortunate to be able to attend “The Filter and Focus” workshop with Susan Melrath and Terry Froelich. As many of us voiced, we had never been taught the Principles and Elements of Design that was so thoroughly provided in this course. We were given a tool kit that is an endless exploration for both beginner and professional artist. Lectures, illustrated examples, exercises and instruction were generously given for us to apply to our own work.” ~ Dianne Cacchioni

"This retreat was hands down the most inspiring class I've ever taken. I suspect my next ArtFuel retreat will once again surpass expectations. Terri and Susan are generous, committed and caring coaches, two of the most highly qualified out there. The knowledge they shared was innovative and has changed my approach to art making. I soaked up the challenging exercises which helped me digest the concepts. I'm eager to continue learning from these two very gifted artists and teachers." ~ Suzanne Lewis

"As a fairly experienced artist, I found the quality of the teaching & learning to be first-class. The lessons were very consolidated and content-rich, with challenging exercises. I learned more in one week than I did in a year of art school...and I might not be exaggerating too much!" ~ Susan Walker

"I left the "Filter and Focus" retreat in Santa Fe filled with gratitude for what I learned and the people I learned it with. I'm grateful for having the opportunity to immerse myself in my art practice and learn how to push my art forward. The daily exercises were thoughtful and well explained. They illustrated art principles and elements and how to optimize their use in our own style of work. They were generous with their time and knowledge. They encouraged all of us to paint the things we love, and to use the tools to make that art better. This retreat was a game changer!" ~ Pat Goeke

What was the most important thing you took away from Filter & Focus? "Art wise-- a ton! My thought… ‘Color became a friend that I want to get to know more.’. Before I have been a grab a color when I need a pop or something in the design - but not taking into account the specific shade/tint, saturation or harmony that color addition would do for the painting. New mindset for me with this methodical way of teaching you gave step by step - day by day. The exercises helped me to put into action the learnings of color/ saturation/ temperature etc. AND huge for me, is the teaching of dialing up and down what works and flows for you. The way Susan drilled into it- it was a bingo for me. I couldn't have answered that until this course/teachings/philosophy was shared with me. Now I confidently can answer that question- ‘Lorie = color and shapes’. The result is now in my head I know better how to start a painting, how to move through and what sings to me to make a Lorie painting that I like. I finally have a very simple road map---color and shape is my base. As you say.. stay focused and use my own filter ( color/shape). Love this so much!" ~ Lorie Sadler

Filter & Focus is taught using acrylic paint. The concepts we are teaching apply to other mediums, however we will only use acrylics during the course.
You may use another medium if you feel proficient in mixing color and value and achieving opacity and transparency. -
The only way to answer this is to say that we consider a beginner someone who has never, ever picked up a paintbrush. If this is you, this course is too advanced. However, If you have used a brush and paint, or taken a workshop/online class and have the desire to dive deeper into the principles and elements of art, then this is for you! We strongly feel that continued learning is part of the growth of an artist and their practice.
-
We will look at work produced in the course each week. We can’t promise that everyone will have their work discussed, but the feedback will be pertinent because everyone will be doing the same exercises. It’s incredible how much you can learn by seeing critiques of your colleague’s work!
-
The content and the two live calls each week will be approximately 3-4 hours. There will be exercises and painting prompts and the time each person will spend on this will be a personal decision.
